Why is the engine light on on my 1991 Ford Taurus?
My engine light goes on and off. Usually it comes on right as i hit somewhere between 45 to 50 mph. Then sometimes it will go off again when I let off the gas. I have notice when I go real slow it sputters and I know I need new shocks. But other than that the car runs great. When I say sputters sometimes I do mean hardly ever. Please help or tell me how to help myself without going to mechanic.
fuel filter has been replaced but last year, could it be my fuel pressure regulator or my fuel injectors?Or something else

That problem sounds like the VSS or vehicle speed sensor is bad. That Sensor is located at the transmission. You should never guess at the problem. The first thing to do is use an ODB -1 diagnostic tool that connects to the diagnostic link inside the car. You can find this tool at your neighborhood auto parts store, i.e… AutoZone Auto Parts Store. In fact they will diagnose the problem for FREE. This tool narrows down the cause of the problem. This tool is only used to diagnose a (check engine) light problem.
make sure gas cap is tight
Could be as simple as replcement of fuel filter, do you know if it ever was done. If not, it’s an inexpensive step that "might"solve your problem. Engine light coming on as speed increases could indicate that the engine is starved for fuel. Good luck,Ralph
I am having the same problem with my 1991 Taurus. My mom was driving and it began to lose speed. This was right after she put gas in the car (she borrowed it). I never had the problem but once. I was on the interstate and the check engine light came on. Now I started the car and the brake light was on and the power windows would not let down. I turned off the car and started it again, the windows came down and the brake lights were off.
