i have some stupid questions about my 1987 ford taurus?
first of all i am a new driver i was taught to drive i am a good driver and that is about it…no one taught me much else lol, so i am learning things the hard way…aka had some trouble with the car, because i wasn’t taking proper care of it…anyways enough here are my stupid questions…
*what is the difference between the two drives?
i mean i can feel that there is a difference but what is each for or which is better for just driving around the city?
*my spark plugs are old and i will be getting new ones, is there a certain type i should get or would they just know when i go to buy them?
*when i am stopped at a light (or any other time i am stopped while the car is running) my car just kinda shakes is that normal just because the engine is running or could there be something wrong?
i know i have more better questions but now i am drawing a blank….

The ‘D’ closest to the neutral position allows the transmission engage ‘overdrive’, and this gear position will provide you with lower engine RPM’s, and therefore better mileage.) The other ‘D’ will just keep the transmission from reaching the overdrive, or top gear. It is better for use in traffic, and lower than highway speeds. (At lower speeds, and in traffic, the transmission will shift in and out of overdrive so often, it may be annoying, and overtax the transmission. This other ‘D’ is also better suited for towing. There is info on this in your owner’s manual.
Any auto parts store can give you the right plugs based on the Year, Make, Model, and engine size if there is more than one. (They look up the plugs in a book).
Another answerer gave a list of possibilities of why your car may be shaking. It could really be anything. A mechanic is needed to figure this out.
OEM spark plugs from any ford dealer should be fine for your application. A rough idle could be caused by worn or improperly gapped spark plugs, a blocked PCV valve, a vacuum leak, or possibly worn or loose engine mounts. There are many other causes for rough idle, but those are the most common.
The difference between 2 drives is that 1 opens all the cylinders and one doesn’t, If you take your car to any auto shop they’ll know what kind of spark plugs you’ll need and about the shaking, its just an older car its pretty normal.
the shaking is from the bad spark plugs. go to a auto parts store and buy motorcraft plugs. they are made from ford and they would be a lot cheaper than at the dealer
Drive in the d to the left with the box around it. That means it will shift from 1st gear, 2nd gear, 3rd gear and overdrive. If you drive in d to right it will go 1st, 2nd, 3rd. It will rev higher and use more gas. Only used about 1% of the time, possibly to slow car down going down large hills or if towing a trailer.
You can save yourself a few bucks by not putting platinum plugs in, they usually make both platinum and regular spark plugs, only the platinums can last longer. If the plugs have been in for a long time, take the car to a tech that is very careful, so that they do not break off in the head. If this happens, it is much harder and more expensive to fix. Possibly even requiring a cylinder head to come off. That is why I personally disagree with the claim of Platinum plugs staying in longer, but anyway.
The shaking may be fixed with new plugs, however I suggest a complete tune up. Replace air and fuel filters, pcv valve, spark plugs, cap, rotor wires. Also get maf sensor cleaned and IAC cleaned. This is a very broad list, but since it has been a long time for the plugs, I would suspect all of the other things need done.
