Gas mileage of Taurus and modern Challenger?
Isn’t it weird? 2002 Ford Taurus gets 18mpg city and 25mpg highway. The 2009 Dodge Challenger V6 gets 18mpg city and 25mpg highway. Both are V6 24 valve. But the newer Dodge Engine has variable valve timing to save gas. Why would they get the same gas mileage when they are totally different cars. Remember that the Dodge uses a live rear axle while wastes energy that could have been used to drive the wheels. FWD is more gas efficient. So what gives?

Actually, the Challenger engine DOES have better fuel economy. Like you said, the rear axle uses more power. Also, the Challenger weighs over 4,000 pounds while the Taurus is around 3,000. Because of this, the engine has to use more power to move the Challenger than it would the Taurus.
If the Challenger engine was in the Taurus, it would get more MPG, and if the Taurus engine was in the Challenger, it would get less MPG.
