Does it hurt to shift an automatic transmission?
I own a very old car (1988 ford taurus) and it has an automatic transmission. I’m a real freak about merging onto highways, so I usually shift it from the overdrive gear into the drive to downshift it (Pushing the pedal to the floor doesn’t always downshift it) and try to get up to speed as quickly as possible. So the question is, would this have cause my need to rebuild the transmission after 67,000 miles?

No. I manually shift my tranny all the time and have most of my life and i’m old. Living in the mountains you have to do it otherwise you’ll ride the hell outta ur brakes going down and lose speed going up. It doesn’t hurt any as long as you don’t red line it when accelerating. In other words don’t let it whine out to much.
Nope – As long as you do put it back into OD when you’re on the hi way.
it sounds as if it was already faulty, it would have eventually went out any way
