The Taurus did in fact save Ford from bankruptcy. There are books on the subject to attest to that. The first gen Taurus was quite the departure from the mid-sized cars that the Big 3 had been producing in years prior. It was aerodynamically styled, and had a firmer more European suspension. It was also the first car Ford made that was a total collaborative effort between the engineers, the exterior designers, and the interior designers, input from Ford's overseas departments were also incorporated into the design. The result of all of this was a car that drove like a European car, had a user-friendly interior, and had distinctive styling. Had the car flopped, it would've bankrupted Ford easily. But it turned out to be a huge hit. Unfortunately Ford failed to keep the design competitive and by the late 90's the Japanese competitors had left the Taurus in the dust in nearly all respects.

The Taurus did not save Ford. However, the one car that did bring up its popularity is the Ford Pinto.

The Taurus (and Mercury Sable) certainly didn't hurt their bottom line - but the F-150 was their cash cow for most of those years.
