I just checked the interchange manual, and if it's a manual transmission, then '86 thru '89 4 cylinder is the same. However, if it is an automatic, then the older Escort flywheels look the same, but would not work. The problem would be with the center hole where it goes over the back of the crankshaft. So that is probably what happened. Someone (probably not intentionally) gave you the wrong flywheel. Take the old one with you when you get another one. This will help determine what the one is that is needed. You can match the new one to the old one to see if it is the same when you take the old one with you. This is something you should do for most parts on most cars. Take the old part with you to match up. And if you got one for a 6 cylinder Taurus, it is different too.

if you have an automatic but ordered a flywheel instead of a flexplate then you may have gotten a flywheel for manuel transmissions which would be the wrong size.
