anybody know the fix for ford taurus transaxail inability tochange gears?
1991 Taurus has reverse and first.I heard there are shorts that develop in the sensor wiring harnesses, and that the wiring connecter plug to the shift cyliniods can have the insulation melt by engine heat, thereby causing a bad signal going to the computer.

The speed sensors on these cause most of them not to shift. There are two and would check or change both. The solenoids and such can go bad as well. Speed sensors though can be done from outside the trans before going further into it. If need a good used transmission after diagnosis go to http://www.car-part.com and there you can search all major salvage yards in the U.S. and Canada. toll free numbers and prices, etc. We have used them extensively over the years to find virtually any used car part that wasn’t cheap enough or available locally.
It could be your shift solenoids. The A and B shift solenoids control gear selection by controlling the pressure to the shift valves. Or, you might just need a transmission fluid flush, and make sure you use the correct fluid (Type F ATF for Ford) recommended by the factory.
I am an old ford tech, while what you say is some times true. It is not always the case. Do you have reverse and first only? Is the check engine light on or flashing. Has the engine been changed or transmission? Is the wiring harness connected?
